The teacher recommendations are an important, but often overlooked, aspect of the college application process. After all, it means a lot to a college what your teachers have to say about you not only as a student but as a peer to your classmates, too.

Sometimes, it can be smart to provide your teachers with a “Brag Sheet” in advance of them writing your recommendation letter. In this Brag Sheet, you’ll basically brag about yourself…quite literally. Think of it kind of like a resume, but you’re listing your activities, grades, character traits, awards, and more. Providing this type of concise, well-organized summary for your teachers will be beneficial for a couple of reasons. First, it helps make their job much easier, and they’ll have an easier time crafting a recommendation about you. Second, by providing a brag sheet you are effectively encouraging your teacher to write what you want them to write about you. For instance, if you want your teacher to emphasize the amount you participate in class or your problem-solving skills, put those in your brag sheet!

I’ve put together this FREE brag sheet template to guide you as craft your own brag sheet. Feel free to make it your own and use just the pieces that you like. It’s up to you what you brag about! Remember that this will be used internally by your teachers and recommenders only and is not something that you will send in with your actual applications.
